Sometimes an unusual palette makes a dramatic statement. I used purple in this wetland scene. If nature had her way it would have been in the blue/green family. A friend of mine advised me to take this approach and I never looked back. 

It helps if it's a complimentary colour. If you're self taught like myself, I'm not entirely up on colour theory as are school taught artists.
